Artist vinyl values

Michael Jackson vinyl values.
Originals, album by album.

Michael Jackson's three Epic albums with Quincy Jones sold in enormous numbers, so an original copy is rarely scarce. Value comes from the details: the first Thriller jacket without the co-producer credit, promo stamps and labels, the pressing plant in the runout, and whether the gatefold and inner sleeve are clean.

Michael Jackson original vinyl value overview

Expect most copies to fall in the $10 to $40 range. Promos, sealed copies and clean US originals with intact inner sleeves sell for more. Bad is newer than Thriller, but the original US LP regularly outsells it.

NM originals

$25–$100

These ranges span the covered albums; they are not a single price for every pressing. Open the album guide and match the label, catalog, matrix, packaging, and grade before comparing a copy.

How to compare the right copies

An artist name and album title describe the music, not the manufacturing history. Work from the physical evidence before using any value range.

  1. Read the catalog number on the spine and on the labels; Bad uses OE 40600 on the spine and E 40600 on the labels.
  2. Check the back of the Thriller jacket for Michael Jackson's co-producer credit before calling a copy a first printing.
  3. Look for a gold promo stamp on the back cover and 'Demonstration' wording on the labels, then grade the inner sleeve along with the record.

04

What moves a copy toward the top of the range

The strongest value signal is a complete set of details that all point to the same issue. For the albums covered here, pay particular attention to:

  • Off the Wall: Sealed 1979 copy with the hype sticker on the shrink, or a near mint promo.
  • Thriller: First-printing jacket without the co-producer credit, near mint, with the lyric inner sleeve intact.
  • Bad: Near mint Carrollton copy with a clean gatefold and the lyric inner sleeve.

A later reissue in excellent condition can still be a great listening copy. It should simply be compared with reissue sales rather than original-press prices.

A few questions

The ones that come up.

Among the albums covered here, near-mint confirmed originals span $25–$100. The exact album, pressing, completeness, and condition determine the price, so use the linked album guide rather than treating that span as a blanket artist value.

Match the release-year label, complete catalog number, both runout matrices, jacket construction, and any original inserts. No single color, logo, or matrix fragment proves the whole pressing by itself.
