Think beyond the first scan.

Crown Vinyl vs. Record Scanner

Both apps can start with a photo or barcode. Crown centers on reviewing and saving your records, then checking ownership while shopping. Record Scanner also advertises custom shelves, a wishlist, valuation tools, CSV export, and Discogs integration. Think about what you want to do with the collection after the scan.

Try Crown: first 10 record saves free, then credit packs. No subscription.

01 · At a glance

Scanning is the beginning of the decision

Record Scanner is worth considering if organizing shelves, valuing a mixed-format collection, or working with exported data matters to you. Crown is worth trying for a focused routine built around your physical vinyl and saved catalog.

02 · Start with the record

Both offer a photo route for records without barcodes

Record Scanner advertises cover-photo, barcode, and catalog number identification, along with manual search. Its App Store description covers vinyl, CDs, and cassettes. If you catalog several formats, that scope is a useful reason to look closely.

Crown offers guided photography or a barcode scan. Review the suggested release, correct the details or choose another candidate, then save the record with your photos. Similar sleeves and shared identifiers can need a closer look; neither a feature list nor a scan is proof of an exact pressing.

Try the records you actually collect: a clear barcode, an older cover without one, and an edition with similar-looking reissues. Check the suggested details against your copy before saving. This page does not rank the apps’ recognition performance.

03 · After identification

Shelves, exports, or an ownership check

Record Scanner’s website describes custom shelves and collection or wishlist sharing. Its listing also advertises market-value tools, CSV collection export, and Discogs integration. These are useful considerations if you want a catalog organized like your room or data you can work with outside the app.

Crown keeps saved record details and your photos in a searchable, cloud-synced catalog. While shopping, “Do I own this?” checks a barcode against that catalog. Results can distinguish a matching pressing from the same album in another or unknown pressing. Records you have not saved cannot appear in the result.

A market estimate is a reference, not a guaranteed sale price. Review the edition and condition before using a value to decide what to buy or sell.

04 · Understand the paid action

A saved record and a scan are different units

Crown gives you 10 free record saves. After that, consumable packs are 5 credits for $0.99, 25 for $3.99, or 100 for $9.99. Each new saved record uses one credit; there is no recurring subscription. US prices were reviewed October 2, 2026 and may change.

Record Scanner’s February 4, 2026 product article describes a Free plan with a collection limit and an Unlimited plan whose pricing varies by region. It does not state the numeric limit or billing period. Its App Store listing confirms a free download with in-app purchases.

Its credits help article, last updated November 26, 2020, describes credits for cover scans, catalog number scans, and price predictions, with an allowance and a subscription option. That historical article is not confirmation of today’s allowance or offer.

The public purchase entries do not establish a clear billing period for every offer, so an exact monthly or annual price comparison would be misleading. Check the current in-app allowance, which actions consume credits, and the purchase or renewal terms before paying. Compare the work you plan to do, not just the price of an item called a credit.

05 · Try before moving

Keep the catalog you have already built

If CSV exports, custom shelves, or Discogs integration are already part of your Record Scanner routine, check how you would preserve that work before switching. We have not verified a Crown CSV or Discogs collection import or writeback workflow.

Keep your existing catalog and try a small set in Crown. Choose Record Scanner if its organization and data tools meet your needs; choose Crown if reviewing, saving, and checking your own vinyl is the routine you want to build. The choice does not require declaring one app better at every task.

06 · Check the details

Official sources and other comparisons

Reviewed October 2, 2026. Record Scanner features are based on its official website and listing, not hands-on comparative testing. Its older credits article is identified by its update date. Crown’s workflow and credit prices were checked against the app source.

Also compare Crown vs. Discogs for free collection tracking and release research, or Crown vs. Spinz for Discogs sync and social collecting. Explore the Crown app before starting.
