Album value
Van Halen — Van Halen.
First-press value.
Van Halen's debut came out February 10, 1978 on Warner Bros., produced by Ted Templeman and recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood. It has since been certified Diamond for ten million US copies, so 1978 copies are everywhere and most sell for $15 to $20 on Discogs. The first pressing is the one on Warner's Burbank palm-tree label. About six months after release Warner moved the album to its new cream WB label, and every copy after that is a later run.

How to confirm a first-press
Three things separate an original from a later reissue beyond the catalog number.
- First pressings are on the Burbank label with the color picture of a palm-lined street; a cream label with faint horizontal lines and the WB shield is a late-1978 or 1979 rerun of the same BSK 3075
- Runouts read BSK-1-3075 and BSK-2-3075 plus a plant mark: WW with an etched ◁ for Winchester, GOL for Goldisc, a stamped 0 for Jacksonville, a stamped star for Los Angeles. All are palm-tree first pressings and sell in the same $15–20 median range
- First copies came in shrink wrap with a hype sticker and a printed inner sleeve, in color on most copies and black and white on some
- A 'ghost' label with tiled WB watermarks and a barcode on the back cover means a mid-to-late-1980s reissue; Columbia House text on the back cover, or COLUMBIA NY in the runout, marks a record-club copy
The matrix runout etched in the dead wax is the definitive identifier when label and catalog number both look era-correct.

What it's worth
Recent sold-listing ranges. Pressing, condition, and current market all move the number.
| Pressing & condition | Recent sold |
|---|---|
| 1978 first-press (NM) | $25–$60 |
| 1978 first-press (VG+) | $10–$20 |
| Reissue (any later catalog), NM | $12–$30 |
What pushes to the top: A near-mint palm-tree first pressing with its printed inner sleeve, ideally still in the shrink with the hype sticker.

The ones that come up.
Check the label design (Warner Bros. Burbank palm-tree), the catalog number (BSK 3075), and the matrix runout etched in the dead wax. All three need to line up for a confirmed first-press. First pressings are on the Burbank label with the color picture of a palm-lined street; a cream label with faint horizontal lines and the WB shield is a late-1978 or 1979 rerun of the same BSK 3075.
A near-mint palm-tree first pressing with its printed inner sleeve, ideally still in the shrink with the hype sticker brings the top of the NM range, typically $25–$60.
Most sell for about the same. Cream-label reruns from 1978 and 1979 go for about $13–17 on Discogs, and the 2015 remaster (R1 547642) and 2022 reissue (R1 670899) for about $20–26, so a worn palm-tree copy can bring less than a clean reissue. Three later editions sell for more than the original: the 2009 180-gram R1 3075 at about $72, Mobile Fidelity's 2023 UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S 2-032) at about $118, and DCC's numbered 1998 LP (LPZ-2066) at about $270.
Van Halen was issued in stereo only as a first-press. The BSK 3075 pressing is the reference.
