How to confirm a first-press

Three things separate an original from a later reissue beyond the catalog number.

  1. MS 2225 on the labels, a 0698 price code on the spine, a textured jacket and a printed lyric sheet
  2. On some 1975 labels the rim text has no Warner address or logo; labels from about 1976 carry the full Warner Communications rim text with the 91510 zip code
  3. Many copies are stamped KENDUN in the dead wax with a hand-etched '♡ POGO', a mark showing producer Keith Olsen was present for the cutting; Winchester copies show a rifle symbol
  4. Later pressings were renumbered MSK 2281; the UK original is K 54043 on mustard Reprise labels without the Warner 'W' logo, in a textured jacket

The matrix runout etched in the dead wax is the definitive identifier when label and catalog number both look era-correct.

A few questions

The ones that come up.

Check the label design (Reprise tan steamboat label), the catalog number (MS 2225), and the matrix runout etched in the dead wax. All three need to line up for a confirmed first-press. MS 2225 on the labels, a 0698 price code on the spine, a textured jacket and a printed lyric sheet.

MS 2225 with early rim text, the POGO etch, a clean textured jacket and the lyric sheet; promo copies have sold for a median of $50 on Discogs brings the top of the NM range, typically $25–$60.

Reissues use different label designs, different mastering, and were pressed in far larger quantities. Fleetwood Mac reissues from later decades trade at $12–$25 per NM copy. The first-press premium reflects scarcity, era-authenticity, and collector demand — not the music itself.

Fleetwood Mac was issued in stereo only as a first-press. The MS 2225 pressing is the reference.
