Keith Whitley — L.A. to Miami.
First-press value.

Keith Whitley's first full-length RCA album came out in October 1985, after the 1984 mini-album A Hard Act to Follow. Produced by Blake Mevis, it gave him 'Miami, My Amy', his first top-20 country hit. It exists on vinyl in two different forms. The first LP, RCA Victor CPL1-7043, has eight songs. A revised 1986 LP, AEL1-5870, has ten: it adds 'Hard Livin'', 'Homecoming '63' and 'Quittin' Time' and drops 'I Wonder Where You Are Tonight'. Both now sell in the low hundreds on Discogs.

How to confirm a first-press

Three things separate an original from a later reissue beyond the catalog number.

  1. The 1985 first LP is CPL1-7043 with eight songs; side A ends with 'I Wonder Where You Are Tonight' and there is no 'Homecoming '63' or 'Quittin' Time'
  2. US CPL1-7043 copies were pressed at RCA's Indianapolis plant; runouts read CPL1 7043A and CPL1 7043B with DMI and Randy Kling's signature mark, and the barcode is 0 7863-57043-1
  3. The ten-song 1986 LP is AEL1-5870 (barcode 0 7863-55870-1); Discogs notes that seven of its tracks were previously released on CPL1-7043

The matrix runout etched in the dead wax is the definitive identifier when label and catalog number both look era-correct.

A few questions

The ones that come up.

Check the label design (RCA Victor), the catalog number (CPL1-7043), and the matrix runout etched in the dead wax. All three need to line up for a confirmed first-press. The 1985 first LP is CPL1-7043 with eight songs; side A ends with 'I Wonder Where You Are Tonight' and there is no 'Homecoming '63' or 'Quittin' Time'.

A sealed CPL1-7043; one sold on eBay for $675 in January 2026, far above the roughly $135 Discogs median brings the top of the NM range, typically $100–$200.

They trade in the same range. The 1985 eight-song CPL1-7043 sells for about $100–200 near mint and the 1986 ten-song AEL1-5870 for about $75–300, so count the songs rather than assuming the first one is worth more. Discogs lists no reissue of either.

L.A. to Miami was issued in stereo only as a first-press. The CPL1-7043 pressing is the reference.
